The 116th Congress officially went into session January 3, 2019.  As PHCC National has reported, in this current congressional cycle the U.S. Senate is controlled by Republicans (53 Republicans-47 Democrats) and the U.S. House of Representatives is now controlled by Democrats (234 Democrats-200 Republicans).

Leadership in the Senate remains the same as it did for the 115th Congress:

  • Majority Leader – Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
  • Minority Leader – Chuck Schumer (D-NY)

The House, however, shifts to:

  • Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
  • Majority Leader – Steny Hoyer (D-MD)
  • Minority Leader – Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)

Because of the political shift in the House, committee chairs have also changed on the committees of jurisdiction on issues impacting the p-h-c industry. The change in leadership in the House is now Rep. Lydia Vasquez (D-NY) taking over the chair for the House Small Business Committee and Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) assuming the chair for the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

PHCC National will also begin to expand and work  closely with the House Appropriations Committee, now chaired by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY). The administration and leadership on Capitol Hill have signaled that there are several issues both will agree on – including infrastructure bills, which fits in with PHCC’s focus to push for funding for water infrastructure funding.
